MumsAid Supports Research Project Into Parental Support For Interracial Couples

MumsAid is proud to support a new research project into the experience of interracial couples. The project aims to improve understanding of and support for couples as they transition into parenthood.

The number of interracial families in the UK has grown over the past decade, an increase which is demonstrated between the last 2 censuses, in 2011 and 2021. Current frameworks highlight the importance of cultural awareness, but there is no specific guidance on supporting interracial couples. This can lead to missed opportunities for care. It is hoped that by providing guidance, the transition to parenthood for interracial couples can be better supported by health and social care professionals.

Trainee Clinical Psychologist Annabel Mormah of the University of Surrey is undertaking the study, which aims to inform future training and ensure culturally inclusive and responsive support. Through a 15-minute questionnaire, information on approaches to cultural identity, considerations in practice and existing gaps will be gathered.

If you can contribute to this research, either from the perspective of an interracial couple or a health and social care professional, please view the information sheets below for more information.
