We’re thrilled to share that our Young MumsAid programme, which provides essential support to young mothers experiencing mental health challenges, has been featured in a BBC London News article. The piece highlights the profound impact that MumsAid has had on young families in south-east London, thanks in part to funding from BBC Children in Need.
Our YoungMumsAid programme was launched 10 years ago to provide specialist mental health support to teenage mothers and their babies. The programme creates a welcoming, non-judgmental space where young mothers can access professional counselling, practical guidance, and a network of understanding peers. Many young mums come to us through referrals from midwives, social workers, and healthcare professionals, often facing housing insecurity and other hardships.
Kelly Jordan, our advocacy worker, explained to the BBC that what many of these young women need most is “someone to be kind and a safe space without judgment for a bit of advice.” This sentiment reflects our commitment at MumsAid to providing compassionate, individualised and holistic support, helping young mothers build confidence and resilience as they move forward.
In the BBC article, young mothers share how their lives have changed through our weekly sessions. Tyler, a young mum who had her son during the Covid lockdowns, described the weekly gatherings as a vital source of connection and relief from isolation. “It’s really hard being a young mum,” she shared, “but these sessions help reduce the feeling of being alone.”
Our stay-and-play sessions, another feature of Young MumsAid, provide a warm, family-friendly environment where mothers and their children play together, building bonds and memories. Through group activities, advice, and the camaraderie of other young mums, participants can focus on their mental health while knowing their children are cared for.
This feature on BBC London News helps highlight the importance of perinatal mental health support and recognises MumsAid’s success in transforming young mothers’ lives. Heather, a mother supported by Young MumsAid, expressed her gratitude in the article, saying, “They go the extra mile. This group has been amazing—they’ve just done everything.”
With consistent support through their children’s early years, we aim to empower young mothers to pursue further education, careers, and stability. It’s an honour to see our work recognised by the BBC and to celebrate this milestone with our community.
Other current funders for our YoungMumsAid programme include The Mayor of London, City Bridge Foundation, The Royal Borough of Greenwich and the Lottery Community Fund
