We are thrilled to announce the release of a ground breaking report by Pro Bono Economics (PBE), Pregnant then blue? The value of MumsAid counselling for new and expectant mothers. The report underscores the transformative impact of our specialist counselling services on maternal mental health, highlighting both the personal and societal benefits.
Key Findings:
• 1 in 5 new and expectant mothers experience depression, often without receiving the help they need.
• 76% of mothers experience significant improvement in their depression following counselling with MumsAid.
• The economic value of recovery is estimated at £10,000 annually per mother supported.
• The total cost of the MumsAid counselling programme over the period analysed is £420,000 whilst the total benefits of recovery are worth more than £3million.
Dr. Miriam Donaghy, Founder and CEO of MumsAid, commented in her statement and video message, “This report confirms the life-changing impact of our work. Mothers who are struggling can’t wait. Supporting them through specialist counselling benefits not just families but society as a whole.” Watch Dr. Donaghy’s message.
The report also highlights the broader, often unquantifiable benefits of our services—improved maternal confidence, strengthened mother-baby bonds, and reduced strain on healthcare services. At a time when depression and mental health challenges are on the rise among mothers in the UK, these findings provide compelling evidence of the importance of investing in maternal mental health.
Rachel Gomez, Senior Economist at Pro Bono Economics, said, “By helping mothers who might otherwise not receive the assistance they need, MumsAid’s programme plays a critical role in supporting families, with benefits that likely spread wider and endure far longer than shown in this report.”
We encourage policymakers and the wider public to consider MumsAid as a model for addressing maternal mental health. Together, we can ensure that every mother and baby gets the support they need for the best start in life.
