Research Highlights Prevalence of Mental Health Problems

New research by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has shown that two-thirds (67%) of pregnant women in London aged between 16 and 24 years have a mental health problem By comparison, the research, published in March, suggests roughly one in five (21%) pregnant women in London aged 25 years and over have mental health problems.

These stark findings highlight why specialist support for pregnant and new young mothers is so critical and why we’re so proud of the difference our YoungMumsAid project is making. Supported by Children in Need, YoungMumsAid provides specialist counselling and support for pregnant and new mothers aged up to 21 years living in Greenwich.

Now in its 4th year our unique service provides free weekly therapy sessions to help young mums with managing anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. The counselling supports teenage mothers with the ability to cope as a new parent, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and strengthening their relationship with their baby.
